Raymond John Kelleher
December 10, 1952- July 28, 2009
Raymond (Ray) John Kelleher died at Providence St Peters Hospital on July 28, 2009 from post surgery complications.
He was born on December 10, 1952 in Chicago, Illinois, received a BA degree from The Evergreen State College in Olympia and earned a Masters in Divinity degree from Seattle University.
He was a woodworker, prize winning writer, teacher and at the time of his death he was a certified chaplain at Franciscan Hospice in Tacoma.
He will be greatly missed by his family, Shannon Nelson-Deighan, stepsons Reed Nelson-Saunders, Caleb Saunders, David John Deighan (Molly) and Rick McKinnon. In Chicago he is survived by his mother, Virginia Kelleher, aunt Mary Garrahan, sisters Mary Kelleher and Liz Repking (Ron) as well as brothers Pat, John (Rose), Matt (Kathy), Bill (Gail) and Bob (Pam) Kelleher. He will be sorely missed by many nieces and nephews in Chicago and Seattle as well as extended family in Minnesota, Connecticut and New York. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathy Jordan, stepson Ian McKinnon, father Raymond Kelleher, brother Danny and sister Julie.
At home, Ray was an excellent chef, gardner and general fix-it man as well as a mandolin, ukelele and guitar player. He was known for his deep intelligence, wit, humor and love of life. An excerpt from a writing of Ray’s on a trip to Italy: “I can’t believe my luck to be in this moment, on this cliff, accepting the sea as if my mother God were funneling it straight into my heart.”
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 30, 2009 at 12 PM at South Bay Grange Hall in Olympia. All are welcome. At a later date Ray’s ashes will be interred at the Delphi Pioneer Cemetery off Waddle Creek Road. In leiu of flowers donations can be made to Franciscan Hospice in Tacoma.
